Spring technology is introduced into mattresses for the first time.

Trade growth forces a move to a new factory in Leeds, with orders to supply the troops in the boer war.

Billy rhodes names a bed "Somnus" after the roman god of sleep and dreams. the first mattresses bearing the Somnus name achieves record sales, matching the company’s increasing reputation for quality.

Continued expansion demands the acquisition of more factory premises. Harry and Billy Rhodes are appointed to run the company, with Miss Rhodes as secretary.

The new Nottingham factory is opened with AJ Ludlam as director in charge of sales and advertising.

A further factory is opened in Manchester to keep up with ever increasing demand.

Showrooms open in London, with emphasis on the high standards and quality. Billy Rhodes is appointed as chairman.

New opportunities arise for ship and hospital bedding for Nottingham factory, further advancing the Somnus brand.

Mattresses being produced by 600 people employed in 6 factories. Products are shipped worldwide.

Somnus mattresses specified for Her Majesty's new royal yacht 'Britannia'.

The business is rationalised to adapt to market forces.

Somnus is bought by Harrison Spinks, one of the country's most respected bedmakers.

New handmade bed collections are launched featuring the unique Sensa pocket spring system.

The Somnus farm is purchased in order to raise sheep using their fleeces in our unique blends of 100% natural upholstery fillings.

A new collection is launched with the technologically advanced Sensa pocket plus. Yorkshire Dales eco wool produced on the Somnus farm reinforces the company's policy of using the highest quality materials sourced locally.

Launch of the somnus national advertising campaigns.

In celebration of HM Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, a limited edition range of beds is created.

Launch of the luxury pillowtop range, featuring the very latest Sensa intelligent pocket springs.
