Winner of Two Queen’s Awards

Somnus are proud to be recognised by Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II for their integrity and design of their beds and have been granted the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation and Sustainable Development – the UK’s most prestigious business awards.

Queen’s Award for Enterprise In Innovation

Somnus have been presented with the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation for their state of the art spring technology. The Somnus sleep specialists are at the forefront of spring development and have designed the technically superior Sensa Intelligent Pocket Spring system, where the springs move independently of each other, dissipating the sleepers’ weight across a higher number of springs to support and contour with the body shape, creating fewer pressure points. The shape and size of each Sensa Intelligent Pocket Spring is unique, allowing a higher number to be incorporated into each hand made mattress. Individual pocket springs are layered, to create a multi-tiered system for total comfort, resilience and support. These unique springs are produced in the dedicated Somnus manufacturing facility, ensuring the very best luxury bed integrity as possible.

Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of every stage of design and production of a Somnus bed. The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development award has been granted for developing innovative, sustainable mattresses and growing resources locally on our farm in North Yorkshire. The farm provides the environment and opportunity to bring the Somnus vision to grow traditional which are sustainable, recyclable and biodegradable, into reality. Natural fibres such as hemp, wool and flax (linen) are grown from seed or raised with the sole intended purpose of becoming comfort fillings in the Somnus range of mattresses. Even the waste products from producing the fibres are used for biomass fuel, animal bedding and building materials. With no pesticides used, the farm helps preserve ancient hedgerows and wildlife too, including 11 threatened bird species that are local to the area. The fact that it takes a year to grow some of the materials for a single mattress is testament to Somnus’s commitment to sustainability.
